Spiritual Coaching Vol 1 #16 Life…

Life…

Jesus said,  I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10. I’ve often thought about this saying of Jesus and wondered to myself what life he is talking about. Full life sounds wonderful but so much of life’s meaning seems confusing and even distressing. A life fully lived can bring pleasure and pain. It can be confusing and disorienting. Yet, living our life and not what someone else thinks is “your life.” I’m not talking about a Frank Sinatra I Did It My Way kind of living. More like Dr. Seuss, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Jesus wants you to really live.

Life….

It may be short or long. It may be filled with significance and acknowledgement. Then at times it feels quite insignificant and even shattered. But taken in the context of a conversation with the Divine it holds the most meaning. It isn’t what other people think. It isn’t so much about success or failure. It’s about the conversation. To have life to the full is to experience the love that is meant for you, and not just for you personally, but also for you to share. Each moment can be a divine conversation.

Life…

The Hebrews thought of life as this grand ongoing conversation. You know what I’m talking about, I hope. You have this conversation with someone with the give and take – the listening and the talking – the quiet and the laughter – it feels just right – it feels full? That’s what Jesus means. The Divine gives meaning to the nonsense of the world. Meaning that is found in the Creator and from the Creator. There is the meaning.

Life…

I laughed when I read what Mark Twain once said, “Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.”  It’s not a repressed conscience but rather a conscience unburdened by guilt and fear. We are learning. Sometimes we learn well and other times poorly but we are learning. The Creator does not intend for you to have it all figured out but to join in the conversation.
