Spiritual Coaching Vol 1 #22 Slower…

Most of life seems to get faster. I’m going to try to walk slower today, eat slower, and maybe just talk a little slower. That’s hard for me to do because I tend to do everything fast. But hey, I think it might be good for me – maybe you too. Try it. Lilly Tomlin, the comedian, once wrote, “For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.”  Funny but true.

It really is up to us to slow the pace. Your work may require a certain speed to operate at during the work hours. So be it. It does not control your life or your breaks. Take the time slow your pace a little and observe what is going on around you. It might be hard for some of you. It might even irritate people around you who are used to a more frenetic you. One of my brothers used to be (still is I’m sure) the slowest of eaters. But I think he enjoys a meal more than most and isn’t frantic about life from what I can tell. Maybe it’s a habit worth practicing by more of us.

Not all walks need to be fast either. Sometimes a slower pace may allow you to look up at the sky or stop and study the branch of a pine tree hanging over the park path. There is beauty all around to appreciate. In every season we can learn to take more of it in and enjoy life in all it’s beauty. The Bible says in Numbers 14:18, “The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion.”  Maybe we could learn something here. Being a little slower and more forgiving might make this a better planet to live on. Take the step today but make it a little slower.
