Spiritual Coaching Vol 1 #24 Grief…

Grief is a thing of exquisite beauty at times. It is so raw and so real. I’ve done two funerals in the last two days and grief is palpable in the room as Scripture is read, words are spoken, prayers are lifted up. Tears well up in the eyes of the mourners as they remember a love. Yet, there is still a sense of continuation of this life – this soul – this beloved. When there is hope people have a sense of what Psalm 30:11 says, You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.

I have never seen a funeral break into dancing, I have heard that a New Orleans funeral parade can become a party of music and dancing but I have not witnessed one. I think I would like to. I would like mine to be like that. Life is wrapped in the eternal all the time. We simply have not developed the perception to see the eternal. It is only with the eyes of faith that we can witness the eternal around and in us. My favorite poet, Wendell Berry, wrote, I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief… For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. Ah ha – there it is. Live today. With grief or dancing – live and love. It is so short and the meaning of it all is wrapped not in the length of days but in our the eternal spirit. Life is short so don’t be wasteful and full of regret. Live. Live by faith. Let mourning be turned to dancing.
