Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #9 Graceful

So close to the word grace is the adjective, graceful. A word we might use to describe a dancer or the way a snowflake falls to the earth. Oh that we could use it more frequently to describe the way people are. How remarkable it is when we say that he or she is a graceful victor or graceful loser. We are too concerned these days with the horserace that is Washington D.C. and the stock market. It’s almost un-manly to describe someone as a graceful man and it weakens women to describe them as graceful women. We want macho and femme fatales.

Late nineteenth century writer Henri Frederic Amiel said, Women wish to be loved without a why or a wherefore; not because they are pretty, or good, or well-bred, or graceful, or intelligent, but because they are themselves. This could be said of man or woman. To be graceful is to be you in the fullest sense. Be yourself for you are graceful. Not necessarily by all your actions but by your very nature. If we acted on our created nature rather than on our de-humanizing impulses how much better would we be? To be born into sin does not mean we need to continue to wallow in it.

In the New Testament (1 John 3) it says, We don’t know what we shall become in the future. We only know that, if reality were to break through, we should reflect his likeness, for we should see him as he really is! Everyone who has at heart a hope like that keeps himself pure, for he knows how pure Christ is. Powerful words that strike at the common assumptions about humanity. “If reality were to break through…” Be who you are – not a mask of your nature – not a plaster cast of yourself – Be you – rough edges and all. It is too often in striving to be something that we are not that our creator is left out and our graceful nature is subjugated to the withering onslaught of the world remaking you in its image. Be who you are.
