April 3, 1968 a prophet spoke. A flawed human who spoke with eloquence and spirit. A prophet who saw into the future. Like another prophet who spoke – Isaiah who said,
(There is) A voice of one calling:
“In the wilderness prepare
the way for the LORD;
make straight in the desert
a highway for our God.
New highways of thought need to be laid through the mountains, valleys, deserts, and wherever else they need to take us so we will be free. Can you see it? Are you willing to go there – to the mountaintop or the valley? Look there it is – a new way of living with each other. It’s not politicians changing things. It’s not economists figuring it all out. It’s not kings and princes and tycoons who put the little guys to work so they have bread. It is up to you to travel down that road and up to that peak.
Dr. King said, Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t really matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live – a long life; longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. What do we see from that mountaintop vista? A new way to live with each other. A vision where we treat people with dignity and respect? Where we create the future without fear. Don’t let others create fear in you. Get a view from the summit. Live in a new way with purpose and imagination and dignity. Be the solution – the creative genius that you really are.
