Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #15 Friday…

“TGIF – the day before the weekend – it’s five o’clock somewhere” – these are just a few of the phrases that bring joy to the heart of many. How about this one from a person ready for the weekend, If your boss is getting you down, look at him through the prongs of a fork and imagine him in jail. Or this one, “Who should I stalk on Facebook now?” People are always finding little ways to amuse themselves and make it through to some time off. I for one want to give a shout-out to all those people who work weekends. Other than vacations I have never had a weekend off since 1979 so I really identify with those people who give up that precious time to serve others – medical workers, emergency crews, police, firefighters, servers, clerks, farm workers, pastors, youth ministers, and (add your own here).

There is Black Friday and Casual Friday but my favorite remains – Good Friday. It was that Friday when Jesus spoke those words that still echo through history. “Father Forgive them – today you will be with me – it is finished” – these are healing words to my soul, to all people, and to nations. Where we work hard to get noticed or get a raise or get ahead or earn time off – we don’t ever have to work to know how special we are to God. Religion is spelled, “Do.” Do this, keep that, earn your way, do – do – do. Jesus simply reminds us – “It’s done – it’s accomplished.” Because of Good Friday there is no more earning or justifying or making the grade- just live and love. Be the person you are capable of becoming because you are free. Guilt and shame are wiped away. It’s a new day and a new life. Each day becomes holy. Each encounter becomes an opportunity. Now that is a good friday.
