Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #26 Determination…

There will be all kinds of quotes about the will to win and determination after the big football game – that is American Football – the Super Bowl. It made it into two of my posts but I’m not sure that the determination of the professional football players is what you and I can relate to – well more on that in a few lines. President Harry Truman once said, “America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.” We as a nation are slipping into history and we all need to learn something of the sacrifice and determination that made our country great before we let that happen. It’s more than a level playing field, as our current president has said, although he is right about that. We need a determination to sacrifice to help each other to succeed. Everyone pulling one direction. What is at stake I believe is the American Soul – and I think there is if we look at this great country made up of great worthwhile people.

It begs the question, “Why bother? It is out of our control anyway.” It isn’t. We can’t control everything in our life but we can determine the attitude we take toward this Monday morning. What kind of day will it be? What kind of performance will I put in? How determined am I to make a positive difference with the people I work with, go to school with, interact with, and encounter along the way? Will we carry with us an energy of weakness or determination? Real strength of character and determination is a spiritual matter most of all. Let the Word in 1 Timothy 6:12 resonate with you today, “Fight the good fight for the true faith.” Be determined to trust that you can make a difference. That you were created for great things. Your Super Bowl is a daily adventure called life.

I was impressed with Steve Gleason, New Orleans Saint’s player battling ALS, who said about his disease, “In a way, I see this as an opportunity to continue to be an inspiration, maybe even more so than I ever have been.” More than blocking a punt in the Superdome in the first game after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans? Yes. It is a gift available to you every day. Each day is a new day – the old is gone – the new is not yet here. Fight the good fight of faith doesn’t mean you are going to be fighting with everyone. You will be determined – to do your best – to be your best – to affect people around you in the best way you can – to be the person you were created to be. If we all make the sacrifices needed to make each other succeed we are making our country great while making each other great.
