Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #29 Careless…

Have you ever said something silly and hurtful? Just a careless remark. It wasn’t intended to hurt. It was just a bit sarcastic and maybe bordering on disrespect. I did – in fact I may do it every day and don’t even know it. In some church confessions there is a phrase, “forgive us for the sins that are known and those unknown – things done and left undone.” We are simply careless at times, neglectful, and unaware of our own words or actions. Mark Twain said, “Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul.” Good advice even for an old curmudgeon like Mark Twain. Loose lips may not sink too many ships but they can hurt people to show what we lack in self awareness.

In Matthew 12:36 Jesus is recorded saying, “But I tell you that (people) will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.” Now that is pretty intimidating but what I think Jesus was warning people that to be unconscious or unaware of our careless words is truly a sin. On the other had to have faith that we are not judged only by what we have said or done but by our relationship to the Eternal One can be both comforting and challenging. We want to be better – more conscious – more aware of our words and actions. We are humbled at our own need to forgive and be forgiven. Living more fully in the present is to be tuned in to our words and actions. That is what Twain was getting at – “a tidy soul” is not as prone to carelessness. Be present today with the people you encounter. Start the day out right. Say to yourself and the Creator, “I want to be fully present today. Each encounter, each person, each opportunity is valuable. Help me make each moment count.” Look people in the eyes, listen to their words, be conscious of the words you speak, walk in their shoes, sandals, or flip-flops. Let truthful words seasoned with love come from your mouth. Treat people for what they are, valuable assets created in the image of the Eternal.

Be Well.
