Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #31 Love…

Love…

The English language has lots of words for lots of things but one word that falls very short of its importance is, love. The New Testament Greek language had four words for love. “Storge” which means affection. “Philia” which means a kind of brotherly or sisterly love. “Eros” which is a passion driven love or erotic love. “Agape” which is unconditional love. Our language just lumps them all together. We sentimentalize the true meaning of love. We love our dog, our house, our car, and maybe even our burgers and fries.

Love…

Loving with an “agape” love – give meaning to your relationships. Most of the time we love conditionally. Love has its limits. Who wants to be used or taken advantage of, right? Yet, when love is a verb – when love overflows from the great pool of love that we have been given there is always more to draw from. In Jeremiah 31:3 it says, “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.” Who can ever forget the great “Love Chapter” in 1 Corinthians 13. The greatest power in the universe is love. You were created in love and for love. Even Sir Paul McCartney ended the Grammy Awards singing, “the love you take is equal to the love you make.” It ends up being a verb, an action word. But that is a song and this is real life. From a spiritual point of view the love you take or receive can never equal the love you make or give. That’s because your creator has a reservoir of love that is endless and is unconditional. You are loved with an everlasting love.

Love…

So in the midst of the bleak mid-winter, even if you are in sunny places, love. Love because you are designed to share the love that is available to you to give away. It is real and it is for you. You may not always feel love – but it is nonetheless real and will never change. It is a fact of faith. Don’t medicate it, do’t drown it with substances, don’t hide it in angry words, don’t fight it, and don’t ignore it. It has power to change the world. Valentines Day be a manufactured holiday but why wait and expect it to come to you. Go and share love because there is more to give even after you think you have given it all, just ask.

Be Well.
