Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #32 Valentine…

A day celebrating love and affection. A day set on the Roman Christian calendar in 496 but really revved up by greeting card companies. The old traditions were to make home made cards and give confections to the person you romantically connected with. One of my mentors told me he used take his wife to the pharmacy display of cards and show her the card he would buy if he ever spent the money to buy one. Talk about cheap. For them it was a laugh and fun. A few minutes in the card isle a box of chocolate (the real gift) and then the lovers and friends were off to live life.

Europe and other countries celebrate this day too with a different cultural twist but the message is the same – love. Even the Google search engine “jumped” into the action with a little electronic card if you click on their header. Many of us will never forget the song Burt Bacharach wrote, “What the World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love” – thanks Mr. Bacharach.  Let love be your theme song today. It may not be in words, except for your beloved, but make it real. Love in an unconditional way. Perhaps show love by making amends with someone who hurt you or who has rejected you. Give away love, because when you do it is replaced by the love God gives back. Love multiplies.

So to those you love show it and say it. To your sweetheart embrace and give thanks for the power and energy and love. Even to those challenging people in your life – love them. Love the hell out of them. I’ll leave you with this thought from what I think is the greatest verses on love ever written, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.”

Be Well.
