Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #33 Fame…

It is always sad to hear about another “candle in the wind” superstar whose light is snuffed out too soon. Whitney Houston had an amazing voice trained in the Gospel Music tradition who set the bar very high for anyone who came after her. Her songs became anthems of the eighty’s – now gone. What price is there for fame? Some people hope for it, work for it, dream of it, and then are overwhelmed by it. Some people who never achieve it become distraught and drift into depression thinking, “I could have been a contender.” Marilyn Monroe said once, “Fame will go by and, so long, I’ve had you,  fame. If it goes by, I’ve always known it was fickle. So at least it’s something I experience, but that’s not where I live.” If that would only have been true for her. She too lived and died for fame.

Don’t seek it. It’s one thing to have the kind of talent where fame is thrust upon you – remember it is a burden more than a gift. I like what one of my favorite coaches once said, “Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful,” (John Wooden). You may wish for it as you go to your office, school, cubicle, shop, factory, store, or wherever you travel. You think of the things you could own or buy. You may not realize that the little things you do to love and care for others makes you famous in God’s eyes. Let me paraphrase something Jesus said in Luke 15:7, “I tell you the truth there will be a party and celebrating with the saints and angels over one sinner who turns around than over ninety-nine famous people who have achieved celebrity and are living the ‘good life now.'”  It’s a loose translation but it’s the little things – the small changes – the lives you touch and affect that make a difference to the world and to God. Don’t ever be ashamed or disappointed in who you are. You can make a difference.

Be Well.
