Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #37 Fuel…

The news screams fuel prices are rising to $5.00 or more per gallon by summer. Fuel drives up food prices, plane tickets, and other products you buy. The Chicken Littles are having a field day. Do you remember the Chicken Little story? You don’t? Google it. I don’t like this news – but I refuse to worry about it. I want to do something about it. Let’s change. Let’s look at fuel in a new way. It is a concern for those who depend on fuel for their job. The reimbursement checks wont matter much if the costs keep rising. But I am old enough to remember the 70’s and Jimmy Carter’s folly. We never learned did we?

We waited in lines, gas stations ran out of product, speed limits were changed, cars got smaller, and many other advances came along so we could save fuel. Yet, we remain dependent on foreign countries for our fuel, we don’t have adequate refinery space, our cars are giants, and public transportation is mostly non-existant outside of cities. What do we do? The sky is falling. The world’s first oil rush began in 1751 in Newport, Rhode Island. Merchant Jacob Rodriguez Rivera purchased a waxy substance found only in the head of the sperm whale – spermaceti. He was a local candle maker and he questioned whether this would be suitable for candles. His experiment was a turning point in world history. The whale oil rush peaked around 1847. The price of whale oil was now very high and running out because the whales had become depleted. The novel “Moby Dick” notes a bit of regret at the loss of the whale oil resource, that had once seemed so abundant, and could no longer be found easily.  A crisis! In the  Chinese language crisis means, “opportunity on a dangerous wind.” That’s what those symbols mean at the top.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” The Chinese symbols tell us that there is an opportunity on a dangerous wind – a crisis is brewing. We may not be able to change the world over night but we can change ourselves. More on that tomorrow. Have faith, trust God, and change your world. On this Fat Tuesday we may aim to be a little leaner but is that all bad?

Be Well.
