Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #43 Stretch…

Many of us tend to see life in terms of limits. Siblings tell us we can’t do this, parents don’t want us to try that, we “self-limit” ourselves due to fears or a previous failure. Life lived like this can become boring and unhealthy. We never stretch our body, mind, or spirit. I can remember as a child having a friend who was a Roman Catholic. We had an overnight planned at his home. We were good friends and it would be a fun horror movie night with popcorn and no parent interference – his parents always went to bed early. My parents wanted me home early Sunday morning to go to church. I wanted to go to his church to see what it was like. “No,” came the reply. I’m fairly certain the Jesuits would not have been laying in wait to capture me and haul me off to secret location and re-baptize me. Fear, guilt, and shame can keep us from stretching and exploring even when we are grounded in who we are. After a time we just stop trying and become too comfortable in the same patterns.

Dr Wayne Dyer wrote, “What we think determines what happens to us, so if we want to change our lives, we need to stretch our minds.” That is very much what St. Paul wrote when he said, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2. When we “self-limit” ourselves we need to turn to the Spirit and let it stretch us. It begins with a surrender of previous patterns of thought. We might need to read, take a class, pray, learn a new skill, be coached, or have other means of stretching but we can do it. Back in May of 2010, “USA Today” ran a story about Rueben Ayala who had never graduated from high school because of going off to fight for his country in war. “Sixty-six years later, Rueben finally got around to doing what he had wanted to do for so long: he earned that high school diploma,” The reporter wrote. At eighty-five he stretched the limits and did something extraordinary. How will you be renewed today? How can you stretch the limits and realize some potential that has been limited for too long?
