Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #49 Calm…

http://www.dennymeyer.me      Calm…

In 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War, the British Ministry of information created an iconic poster that simply said, “Keep Calm – Carry On.”  It was intended to be distributed in order to strengthen morale in the event of a wartime disaster. 2,500,000 copies were printed, although the poster was distributed only in limited numbers. It was in the year 2000 that the posters and saying were rediscovered in a sense. Now I’ve seen it everywhere. Yesterday at a favorite Mexican restaurant I saw a new version, “Keep Calm – Eat a Burrito.” Calm is a word that we need in a frantic chaotic and often frightening world. Last night I prayed with a friend who needed calm in the midst of a life-storm.

Like the eye of a hurricane when all the weather around it is swirling and storming we need a calm center where we can turn for personal peace. We need to keep our bearings and experience peace. Saint Francis de Sales, Swiss minister and writer, once said, “Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.” Perhaps you don’t feel that you have that ability within yourself to find that eye within the storm. If you don’t look to your creator who even now creates greater energy that you can draw from.

There is a story in the New Testament that goes like this,  That day when evening came, (Jesus) said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Mark 4:35-41. Here is the question that you and I must ask and answer, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” – within that question and answer you can find the calm that you may not have the personal reserves to access but is available to you in the midst of the fiercest of life’s storms.
