Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #51 Age…

History is not something most of us consciously think of making. We live our life and build a legacy quietly and unnoticed for the most part. Some are thrust into the spotlight and others seek it and then become more conscious of the legacy they are leaving. Francis Bacon, English scientist and author wrote, “I will never be an old man. To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am.” America has its youth culture driven by advertising and consumerism but aging has its advantages. Aging gives many freedoms that the advertisers fear; people are not so gullible, they begin to know what they like and are not so easily manipulated, they use the remote to mute the commercials, they have learned to weather the vicissitudes of life, and they begin to mentally write their own history which can bring perspective and generosity.

When Jesus was executed by the Roman authorities at age thirty-three it always seemed to me that a Christ-follower’s life after that age is all grace. When your master gives you the blessing to live your days beyond his life span – use those days wisely. Think how much he accomplished in three short years of ministry – from carpenter to martyr and savior. How will you then live? Ralph Waldo Emerson spoke a phrase that has always made a connection with me (even though it is more an elusive goal at times), Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an action and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.  Let’s just begin simply today with the first part – thought. As we age this day – sow good thoughts. Begin there. Keep it simple. Let your thoughts be little gifts to you this day. Remember and think on these beautiful words, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
