Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #56 First…

Do you think of Monday as the first day of the week or do you think it’s Sunday? Sunday always seems like a “stand-alone” kind of day – but then I haven’t really had a Sunday off for years with a few exceptions. It seems to me that Sunday should be the start of the week. It has a different pace to it and it ushers in for most people the end of the weekend but also the first of the week. Your days will be much better if you ground it in something that has spiritual meaning. Do you dread the alarm clock going off on Monday morning? Or will it be first and fresh – suggestive of opportunity – is it like being on top of things – fist in line, first to hear, first to be chosen, first to know? First sounds great. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”  Get ready – get set – you’re first to get this message and apply it.

Martin Luther, for whom MLK was named, once said about Bible Study, “First I shake the whole Apple tree, that the ripest might fall. Then I climb the tree and shake each limb, and then each branch and then each twig, and then I look under each leaf.” Study deeply – reflect substantially – think broadly. This might apply to any pursuit in life. Be the first to learn. You can grow so much today and each day this week. Go at it with gusto – be first to discover new things that will energize your life. Once Jesus said that the first would be last and the last first. What he was telling people was to have the heart of a servant – realizing service is the ultimate nature of God and being godlike puts us first in God’s economy. He came to serve, not be served. When we serve each other we actually are giving up being first to let God make us first and make an impact that will change lives.
