Fool…

Some would say that a person who would willingly give up 3,060 Sunday mornings to sit in a building with a bunch of other people singing songs and hearing readings and praying would have to be a fool. Next Sunday is April 1, 2012. It is also known as Palm Sunday on the Christian calendar. The day of the triumphal entry of Jesus of Nazareth into Jerusalem that turned into the beginning of the end of his ministry. He would be accused of sedition, crimes against the state, and heresy. False witnesses would be presented and the authorities would collude in order to have him executed. We’d be fools to follow a leader who so willingly went to his death. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 4:10, “Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed.”  He also said, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” 1 Corinthians 1:27. In the Creator’s economy things are reversed from the world’s economy. What some view as a waste of time becomes the best investment of time one can make. What gives meaning, purpose, dignity, and significance to life? Your status, your power, your race, your color, your sex, your family, your intelligence, your strength, your job, your wealth, your neighborhood, your school, your city – none of these things give you meaning and purpose. What gives meaning and purpose, in what otherwise would be a world of random accidental happenings, is your Creator. So call me a fool. My dignity is not based on my personal achievements or any other factor that is dependent upon me acquiring it – it is given to me as a gift. Even the United States Declaration of Independence, the inspiration to people everywhere, says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator…” The Founders knew in their heart of hearts that it was an innate gift not a human achievement that gives meaning and purpose to life. So be a fool in the sense that you know your life has meaning. Apply that meaning in the love that you give away to those for whom life seems meaningless. Paulo Coelho once said, “The wise are wise only because they love. The fool are fools only because they think they can understand love.” Let your foolishness be shown to be wisdom.
