Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #64 Support…

Have you ever hit your thumb with a hammer? It’s not pleasant at all. Yet, why is it that some relationships we have we go back over and over again and seemingly allow ourselves to be hit over and over again? Surrounding yourself with supportive people who will rejoice with you in good times and help you mange in challenging and difficult times can affect your health in powerful ways. Jesus said, “I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15) Jesus surrounded himself with a group of close friends and gives us an example of how important that can be for us.

John Updike once wrote, “The essential support and encouragement comes from within, arising out of the mad notion that your society needs to know what only you can tell it.” As a great writer, Updike may have been spot on in his own thinking but most of us look for encouragement and support in order to have a productive meaningful life. Supportive people can be helpful to you in several ways: 1. People in your support network can help you get through tough times. Besides just offering practical assistance, they can provide sympathy, laughter, someone to whom you can vent your feelings honestly, and help you think of solutions; 2. Supportive people can help to give you a sense of purpose and meaning in life. They encourage you to make healthy choices, support you when you fail, and applaud you when you succeed; 3. Supportive relationships help you feel better about yourself and your abilities. Don’t look for false or fake praise – but instead seek true and honest and loving encouragement; 4. Connections to supportive people give us a sense of belonging, friendship, and well-being. Just knowing that there is a supportive person in your life can make all the difference physically and emotionally.

So don’t go back over and over again to have your thumb smashed by a hammer. Remember who your friends are and surround yourself with health and life giving people.

Be well.
