Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #65 “Focus Friday”

Lots of people tell me that they feel like they are being pulled in many different directions. As a result they feel that it is hard to focus on what is vital. We all have  difficulty at times delineating between what is essential, critical, important, and non-essential. Often trivia rules the office or home and we lack any clear focus. Steve Jobs, well known for technology that is often blamed for making people lack focus wrote, “That’s been one of my mantras – focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”

So here are some thoughts. FILTER OUT distractions. Turn off TV, iPods, phones, and email alerts for a period of time. Eliminate non-critical device time for a day and see how much you accomplish. PLAN for times that you are better focused. Are you a night person or a morning person? Tackle the tougher projects when you are more focused – don’t waste that time; it’s your best. Low energy times are the times to do the filing, cleaning, and sorting. CLEAR your mind to bring focus. Write down the clutter in your head on a “grass catcher list” so that you can get to it later. Dump it! Think of it as off-site storage for your brain. TRAIN your thoughts by mastering and practicing focus techniques. Prayer, meditation, and concentration are trainable abilities. RESULTS are the payback. You will get more done, you will have more fun, and you will feel fulfilled as well as engaged. Paul wrote in Philippians 4:12,  “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation…” I have a feeling that it had a lot to do with focus.
