Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #73 Weddings…

The season of weddings is nearing and I’d love to hear from you. I actually do a fair number of weddings each year and each one is unique and special. Every single marriage begins with the intention of lasting a lifetime even though everyone knows that 50% of marriages do not make it that long. Many people are choosing not to ‘tie-the-knot’ any more. Yet, for those who choose marriage and those who remain married, I’d like to hear two things: 1. What were the most meaningful readings (scripture, poetry, letters, etc) at your wedding? 2. What has been the thing that has kept you going through thick and thin of life’s challenges?

Perhaps the most chosen reading for weddings that I have been involved with has been from 1 Corinthians 13, “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” Faith is the key to a mutual relationship. Faith in your Creator and the relationship not the rules of religiosity. Secondly, faith in your betrothed. Trust and mutual respect for the person needs to be rooted in a compatibility that can stand the test of time. D. Elton Trueblood once said, “Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservation.” That captures the sentiment of the letter to the Corinthians. Faith is true openness, transparency, and honesty with your partner – trust that they are who they say they are – they are human – they are flawed not perfect. It is when couples faith is divided (not theologically but in each other) that things often unravel. Faith in one another has to be a two way street. It may never be 50/50 but it can be a trust of mutuality – a belief in each other; and more than that a desire for the best for your partner. In the end faith leads us to serve and not be served – to hope and to love.

Tomorrow – the second building block – Hope.

Be Well
