Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #75 Faith…Hope…LOVE

The great Christian writer, C.S. Lewis wrote, “Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives.” Affection is the first aspect of love that creates a sense of being attractive to someone and having an attraction toward someone. It’s more longing than lusting. It is a very basic tenderness that makes two people compatible. You begin to show affection not because you want it but perhaps because you’ve already sensed it in the other. Our culture is so caught up in the sex appeal syndrome that we have nearly forgotten how to be affectionate. People live separate lives together doing their own thing and going their own way. Affection just drains away in the pursuit of selfishness. I came across a poem once that simply said, “For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. It was not my lips you kissed, but my soul.” It is God who creates love – we don’t even capture it or understand it until we learn to give it away freely without an expectation of getting anything in return. Everything else is lust, friendship, interest, and entertainment. Real love just flows out. When it returns it is like a surprise – a welcome bonus – then you know you have something. “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” (1 Cor 13:7) At times we want to force it but it never works that way. It’s easy to give up on a relationship if it is not grounded properly on these qualities – faith, hope, and love. Even though Paul ends the Corinthians passage by saying the “greatest of these is love.” Love can’t be the only thing. Love is like the glue that binds it all together in a gentle harmony of trust and promise. Love drives affection and passion. Saint Augustin said, “Love is the beauty of the soul;” it is because it mirrors God within us. We see a glimpse of the divine in love because it does not ask – it gives freely, willingly, and abundantly. Love is to be given away and not hoarded. It is hard to run out of things to say; so I’ll just stop for today and leave you with one thought,

When there is love you are never poor. Be Well
