Spiritual Coaching vol 2 #79 Study…

George Santayana, while at Harvard in the late 1800’s said, “Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.” John Adams years earlier said, “I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.” Have we progressed in our study? Study is not really what we do any more. The new phrase is “Edutaninment.” We want to be entertained and not so much educated. We are adrift and quickly losing our place on the world scene when it comes to valuing education and enlightenment. We put classrooms in rows like some assembly line of learning and turn out products designed in a state house and US Capital (Oh wait, do they do anything anymore?) and then ask. “What is happening to our country. We have tossed values aside and want to figure out the way to get the fastest buck for our own pleasure. We think of our generation but forget the generations that follow. This is the malady. We do not think – study – reason. There will be a steep price to pay.

It begins with studying a moral purpose. Something that is universal needs to be studied as a basic premise for our existence. Humanism, an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine matters leads to the question, “Why?” Why save the whales, or the planet, or anyone else besides ourselves? Is there some purpose to that? That leads to a kind of moral suicide. There is no higher purpose or code or law or reason to care about anything but yourself. On the other hand, when we study and reflect on a moral compass and set a common ethic, we can achieve order out of chaos. In John 14:27 Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Relax do not be afraid – study – not the art of war but the art of peace. Peace begins by studying things that matter the most. Study today – most assuredly study. Be a student of peace. Peace begins with you but does not end with you. It is a subject that is altruistic and deserves much more attention than we give it. You can be a peacemaker at home, work, school, your neighborhood, church, or club. Do the work, the study, and the application necessary to bring peace to whatever situation you are in. Study and see if I am right. Tell me how you will be a peacemaker?
