I’m heading off to a Habitat for Humanity meeting this afternoon and I’m scheduling this to post in the morning. We are hiring a new Interim Executive Director. What a good organization. So many people have been helped over the years, families with decent housing, children with stable school situations, and neighborhoods positively affected. Many people think that Habitat just gives homes to people – that is not the case. Individuals have to qualify to be selected. They have to have an income, they must put in sweat equity (that is help to build it), they must get a mortgage, and keep up the payments. We are helping communities by adding homes to towns, villages, and cities. There are a lot organizations out there that can use your help. You can volunteer, you can give money, and you can support a cause even on a short term basis – a weekend or at an event. Giving yourself away never diminishes who you are or what you have. It actually adds to your life and personal wealth. If you measure your wealth in terms of your experiences and relationships, which is the best way to measure wealth, you can be rich and not have lots of money and vast investments. Happiness is found in losing your life in things that matter. Jesus said, “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” Matt 16:26 He doesn’t want you to lose anything – he wants you to gain valuable lessons, experiences, relationships, and knowledge. Give a little away and find out how much more you will get back.
