They said they didn’t know if it was part of the movie, a stunt, or if someone was really shooting when an armed gunman entered the theatre in Aurora, Colorado where the new Batman movie was playing. He tossed a canister and then began to open fire. Why have we become a culture of violence? Has humanism improved the condition of our nation? Has years of declaring God is dead, removing the ten commandments from public places, ending school prayer, and taking down crosses and menorah’s helped? In fact we could make Bill Maher the patron saint of the new order but look what declaring God is dead has done to our national ethic. Have people of religion caused problems and conducted violence in the name of God, yes. However, there is a difference between “religion” and “religiosity” and people of faith who express their love and beliefs in meaningful and charitable ways. That’s not to say that people who do not believe in God do not love – I’m sure they do. Yet, as a Christ follower I recognize that the teachings of Jesus were all about loving God and loving neighbor and letting that love permeate society – in fact loving people who do not believe in God is part of who we are.
Society is eschew – broken – deeply flawed. The Dark Knight has turned into a dark night. What we need is as the Latin phrase would say, In luce tua videmus lucem – in Thy light we see light.” We need light within the darkness. We need ethical leaders who state and restate and then live out an ethical norm that embraces love for all people. We need this in homes, in schools, in churches, and society as a whole. We need sane gun legislation – NRA – we do not need a cowboy nation. We need most of all to fall on our knees and pray for forgiveness that we have lost a generation to violence, hatred, racism, sexism, and other ism’s. It is the human heart that needs changing – more laws will never make the difference. So to those who are suffering loss, fear, anger, or other emotions because of the violence in Colorado or anywhere else in the world from Syria to Shanghai I pray and ask you to pray for hearts to be changed and the rule of love become imbedded into the way we live our lives.
