Maybe the title turned you off and you didn’t want to even read the blog today. For those courageous enough to read on let me tell you why I chose this title. No one ever wants to talk about the subject but many people have lost hope and have contemplated suicide. The National Institute on Mental Health tell us, “In 2007, suicide was the third leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24. Of every 100,000 young people in each age group, the following number died by suicide.
- Children ages 10 to 14 — 0.9 per 100,000
- Adolescents ages 15 to 19 — 6.9 per 100,000
- Young adults ages 20 to 24 — 12.7 per 100,000″
It’s not just young people though – this affects every age and most people are afraid to discuss it. I had an uncle that committed suicide, I have had colleagues who died at their own hand, and during my career I have conducted too many funerals for people who had lost all hope and saw this as the only option. So about a year ago I felt moved to do something about it. My staff and I will be making a big announcement that will affect people locally. I hope it will inspire you too. It will lift our spirits and it will raise money that will go toward drug abuse awareness and suicide prevention. I will share that announcement with all of you Monday morning on my blog. There is always hope and there is nothing so desperate that you need to take your own life. Help me to make an impact in this community. In the memo mark drug abuse/suicide prevention. Most of all remember what Jesus said, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” (John 10:10)
