Lots of talking heads criticized President Obama for a comments he made about creating wealth and success. This is what he said,
“Look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”
The core of what he said is true even though we can disagree at how he arrived at that statement or the direction that statement takes us. The central message is true. When we succeed we are not a solo artists. There are people behind the scenes, people who give us opportunities, teachers who have taught us well, pastors who have guided us, and many others who play a role in our success. Spiritual Coaching recognizes that amidst all the praise that gets passed around and that which does not – God is at the heart of all good gifts and “others” who have been placed in our path.
In James 1:17 it says, “So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures.” (The Message) It really does takes a village to raise a child but sometimes we have forgotten that it takes a community of faith to keep us going and to make all our communities a better place. More government wont make a bit of difference unless the human heart is changed. We need a spiritual rebirth in our nation more than a political change. We have no commonality of human worth or value. Our ethical foundations are crumbling more than our infrastructure. What we need are leaders who call us to higher goals and aspirations ethically and then step out of the way as much as possible. We need more mentors and fewer posturing politicians.
Thank someone today who has made a difference in your life.
