Everyone’s to blame for our government being broken. Working together and compromise, which are necessary for the government to function, are no longer occurring. The parties in Washington are so petrified that it’s not just a fiscal cliff we will fall off it is civil society that is in jeopardy. Arrogance in the White House and intransigence in congress are mutually to blame. Put down your political gloves and stop drinking your parties cool aide and admit there is enough blame to go around. Our vote in November will probably not fix this problem; it will take something greater than one election to repair the damages to our system that have been building up for a long time. It seems that it often takes a catastrophic event to change such deep patterns of behavior.
What is the point of this for spiritual coaching? Last night I was reading an insurgent text that undermines the government’s authority and power. It lays bare the fundamental failure of government to solve the human dilema. It is the Book of Revelation from the Bible. It says, “…from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.” (Rev 1:5) This subversive document suggests that power ultimately does not rest in either party nor in any earthly leader. Call it a prophecy, a document, mythic literature, apocalyptic literature, or just holy scripture it says that there is a name above all names and a power above all powers. It tells us that we have an ultimate allegiance that is above the rough and tumble political fray.
I’m not suggesting to opt out of your duty as a participant in the republic but to remember where your citizenship resides. It gives you personal perspective and peace when the pundits get petulant and parties are too pedantic. (I couldn’t help myself there.)
