What a world we live in. It seems the Queen and her attorneys have stopped further publication of topless photos of future Queen Kate. We’ve come a long way from the cries of, “Off with their heads.” Now it’s just, “Off with their tops.” Fines, turning over all copies of the photographs (how do you do that with digital media), and possible fines are all the punishment. Here is the thing – journalism hasn’t really changed much over the years. In general it is biased and often irresponsible. Serious journalism is an oxymoron. We live in an age of “Gotcha Journalism,” gotcha social media, and relationships. I grew up, perhaps to my disadvantage at times with Martin Luther’s explanation to the eighth commandment in my head:
The Eighth Commandment. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. What does this mean?–Answer: We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, [think and] speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything.
“And put the best construction on everything?” No one does that, do they? No matter how you number the commandments the point among Christians and Jews is that there is a place in civil society for guidance and ethics in our behavior from the commandments. For a wider religious and even non-beleiving public the Golden Rule is something that we all could agree about; “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The only way to end this gotcha society is to take personal responsibility for behaving in a better way. So when you post on the plethora of social media, ask yourself that question – “Am I putting the best construction on everything in regards to my neighbor?”
