John 1:4 3-5 Everything was created through him;
nothing—not one thing!—
came into being without him.
What came into existence was Life,
and the Life was Light to live by.
The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;
the darkness couldn’t put it out.
In the pond behind the house I hear the gathering gaggle of geese who talk of their southern travel plans. The daylight hours begin later and the cold air settles in the low lying areas around the Great Lakes region. Change is in the air. I love how John handles the idea of change. Jesus changes everything. “Life-Light blazed” he uses to describe what Jesus does. He diffuses darkness, he brings to light those things that are deadly and dark, he goes the way of the cross not just as another martyr in a long sting of martyrs but as the light who will banish darkness and free people from the dungeons of sin and death. He will cure anger and hatred and other dreaded plagues of a dark world.
We often forget, when our anger stirs, or contempt for another clouds our judgement, that the One we follow is at work in the circumstances of life to stir change and shed light. Our so called “righteous indignation” melts away before his holiness and we become beggars, paupers, and raggemuffins before the wealth of his grace. Let the Life-Light illuminate your own need to absorb the Light-Grace so that you may become a better person. Don’t blame others for your own darkness – we all dwell in darkness – let his Life-Light shine through. Some people will run from the Light – they will hide back in their self made dungeons but the Light will seep in – slowly vividly it will shine in the darkest corners until all is illuminated.
