Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #179 Contentment… http://www.dennymeyer.me
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7
First of all, I would remind everyone who is “worried” about elections and debates and health care and foreign policy to read and re-read this verse. We can either live in fear or faith. Stop listening to television’s “Talking-Heads” and start listening to the voice of assurance that comes from God. When you do, you will become more positive and productive – you will worry less and be happier. The purpose of most news media is to make you either afraid or shocked. There are very few television journalists who just want to report in an unbiased way.
I’m biased too – but I am biased for your happiness. Worry is the enemy of happiness. The Bible expresses it this way, “I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have more than enough. I have learned this secret, so that anywhere, at any time, I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little.” (Phil 4:12) Contentment is not laziness, it is not being uninvolved and withdrawn, and it is not ignorance – it is satisfaction with your personal value and worth. We do not have to be possessed by our possessions. The greatest things in life are not things. The biggest waste of a life is to build a big pile of stuff that people fight over when you are gone. Life is about relationships that matter. Jesus said that the greatest commandment or law (I’d call it a life changing insight) is to love God and love people with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. There is no debate about what happiness and contentment can do for your life.
