There are some people who have a notion that Life Coaching or Spiritual Coaching is some New Age psychic control. They are uninformed. There are so many advantages to Coaching. I have a friend who is a trainer in Indianapolis who is both a physical coach and has been a spiritual coach to some people I know in their eighties. He has improved their life tremendously. He’s moving to California soon and the positive impact he has had on folks is immeasurable. He has demonstrated faith and courage and competence.
What Spiritual Coaching offers is a partnership with an individual. It is a regular reminder that we can achieve more when we have someone come along side us to help us consider solutions, strategies, and to be an advocate for us. I work with a trainer who I occasionally refer to as my personal “torture-master.” He will push me beyond what I would think I was capable of accomplishing. He doesn’t do this by force but by sheer advocacy and accountability. When we have an accountability partner who can customize, observe, listen, and guide us toward a plan it is truly valuable.
In a very real way this is the potential of a pastor. However, we have so institutionalized that role that pastor’s often get caught up in organizational or institutional maintenance and survival. They miss the personal opportunities because they have to keep their organizations afloat. Perhaps the future will offer a more client centered pastor/coach approach to helping people find greater spiritual discipline, growth, and maturity. An executive who hires coaches for his company told me that he has seen 50-55% greater productivity in his employees who are coached than those who are not. Can you imagine the impact on families and individual lives if they have a Spiritual Coach?
Jesus, the greatest Spiritual Coach of all time, worked with twelve select individuals who changed the world. His offer to them was, “Follow me and I will teach you to fish for people.” People are the most significant part of your life and interaction. Goals and accomplishments may be important but relationships matter the most in life and in legacy. Take advantage of your own spiritual well being and you will find that your relationships improve tremendously.
