All politics aside, Americans are one in our thoughts and prayers for the people in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and the other states affected by the hurricane. This is unprecedented in my lifetime. We need to concentrate our prayers on the care and response to help folks in the path of this devastating weather event. Let Psalm 46 which inspired a classic Hymn of the Church – A Mighty Fortress – be our guide and prayer focus:
God is our refuge and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
So we will not fear when earthquakes come
and the mountains crumble into the sea.
Let the oceans roar and foam.
Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!
I called my brother who lives in Manhattan yesterday. He was fine at the time but there so many others who have been displaced and now face great loss. Today you and I are New Yorkers, we live in New Jersey, and we want to let everyone know who is struggling – we stand ready to help. Here are a few tips if you want to help directly:
Be cautious when giving online.
Rely on expert opinion when it comes to evaluating a charity. Be wary of claims 100 percent of donations will assist relief victims.
Find out if the charity has an on-the-ground presence in the impacted areas.
Find out if the charity is providing direct aid or raising money for other groups.
