Spiritual Coaching Vol 2 #219 Auld Lang Syne

Are you ready to be done with the past and embrace the new? Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 it’s set to another old tune. It is well known in many English speaking countries, most of you know it as a part of the New Year celebration sung at the stroke of midnight. The Canadian band leader Guy Lombardo is credited with popularising the song at New Year’s celebrations in America, with his annual New Year’s Eve broadcasts on radio and television. So that is where that comes from. I just don’t hear this version too much but I like it:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne* ? Chorus

For auld lang syne, my jo,for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne. Chorus

We twa hae run about the braes,
and pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin auld lang syne. Chorus

We twa hae paidl’d i’ the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin auld lang syne. Chorus

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!

and gie’s a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne. Chorus

But don’t you love it? I still like looking into the history of things that have become habits of our culture. Speaking of habits… how about a habit of spiritual focus each day. Taking time to think and meditate each day is a gift that gets overwhelmed by the business of most days. Yet we are spiritual beings as much as physical, mental, and emotional beings. If we do not tend to the spirit we have neglected part of the balance we need to be well. Take the time. I have had a few days off to be refreshed and ready to meet the year ahead. Thanks for the many positive comments I have received about following along with me during the year. 1 Corinthians 16 puts it this way, 13 Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. 14 And do everything with love.”

Be Well
