Spiritual Coaching Vol 3 #7 Golden… http://www.dennymeyer.me
The Golden Globes took place last night in a chilly Los Angeles but the “stars” still came out for their awards and to be seen and heard. Speech after speech and the silence of the losers was, as always, deafening. I’m never quite sure how to deal with award shows. I have my opinions about certain pictures and I’m always glad to hear about films that the the popular press has overlooked. There is that scripture that will ring in my ear as I watch all the glitz and glamour:
Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher,
vanity of vanities! All is vanity.
What do people gain from all the toil
at which they toil under the sun?
A generation goes, and a generation comes,
but the earth remains forever.
The sun rises and the sun goes down,
and hurries to the place where it rises.
The wind blows to the south,
and goes around to the north;
round and round goes the wind,
and on its circuits the wind returns.
All streams run to the sea,
but the sea is not full;
to the place where the streams flow,
there they continue to flow.
All things are wearisome;
more than one can express;
the eye is not satisfied with seeing,
or the ear filled with hearing.
What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done;
there is nothing new under the sun. Eccl 1
This is not a reading that is aimless or hopeless – it is realistic. We are here a short while and we are all flawed creatures but we can leave something behind. It may not be noticed or acclaimed by the thousands but it can be real and have a lasting effect. This weekend I got to celebrate two important things. My family celebrated a delayed Christmas (since work and illness prevented us from getting together earlier) and Sunday I got to celebrate with hundreds of volunteers who make ministry in my spiritual community possible. We were able to give away $10,000.00 toward drug and suicide prevention raised from the “Save a Life” concert with Clint Black on December 1, 2012. Yet, now, like a vapor, it is over and people will ask the inevitable question, “what are you going to do next?” It”s like asking in three days, “What won the best picture award for the 2012 Golden Globes?”
The real question is what remains true – what endures – what lasts – and the answer is love. Love is the only thing that remains. Love that comes from the Creator and is available to you and for you to share remains a constant. The individual actions and awards will fade away, the fame will pass into the mist, but the love you share has a “butterfly effect” on the world. Be positive, share some love, and leave a beautiful fragrance behind as you live your life. They may not remember you but the scent of love will remain behind.
