If you don’t think there is an contemporary importance to the Civil War look no further than the trial of George Zimmerman. The media in our country has made this a contest. It has become win/lose case which is based largely on racial divides in our country that still exist one hundred and fifty years after the Civil War. It’s also a gun issue which is hotly contested on state and federal levels.
I don’t believe that Mr. Martin’s family has made it a race issue – they grieve their son’s death as would any parent. Yet, those who have come to their aide have capitalized on the racial divide in our country. Likewise the left and right media have made this into a contest when clearly it could be an opportunity to discuss law enforcement, gun rights, and racial reconciliation. That does not sell. As a public we are attracted to the sleazy vaudeville like atmosphere that the media creates and the media attracts viewers and readers as a result.
So step away from the side show of the media and pray for Mr. Martin’s and Mr. Zimmerman’s families. Pray for the jurors and judge who will endure endless scrutiny when the case is over. Pray for our country that continues to work through many of the issues that caused the Civil War in the first place. What are your thoughts on the “aftermath?” Let me know what you think.
” Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” ! Corinthians 13
