Mine…. Spiritual Coaching (3/99)

When you are in the midst of turmoil, conflict, or suffering do you ever dig deep to find joy? Many people suffer in desperation never looking for the nugget of joy or hope that can be found. The stressbusters for today deal with this subject…

1. Mine for joy in the midst of suffering: Deep in the valley of suffering you can find joy. Simple things can bring you hope and joy even when you are suffering. That little glimmer of light can help you to make it one more minute, one more hour, or one more day. Sometimes you need to dig deep and look hard. It’s a bit like panning for gold. Sifting through pounds and pounds of debris to find one small shining speck of gold. Look, search, scavenge if you must – but find it. It is a bit like David wrote, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me.” Having the sense of presence to guide you or be with you can make the darkest journey brighter and the heaviest load lighter.

2. Respect and share your feelings: Your feelings are real. Don’t deny them and don’t minimize them. Find a trusted friend, coach, or counselor who is a good listener. You need people who can respect your feelings and reflect them back to you helping you to clarify and understand the feelings and what they mean. Denial and posing are cover-ups to the real feelings you have. If you bottle up your feelings up they become like a beach ball that you try to hold beneath the water. The pressure and energy spent holding them under the water are too much with too little reward. The feelings will find a way to come out – sometimes in ways that you don’t want them to – so don’t. So stay in touch with your feelings and share them. I like what the singer-songwriter Amy Grant once said, “If you went to your closet today, would you pull out the same outfit you wore 10 or 15 years ago? You wear feelings and faith differently as well.”

Be Well…
