Do you ever reward yourself? You get up, go to work, work on a project, make phone calls, and all the other duties of life but do you take time for the rest/reward part of your day. Maybe you have a great boss who comes by and gives you an atta-girl or atta-boy on a regular basis. Most people don’t get a regular positive stimulus for what they accomplish. Maybe you will say, “My work is my reward.” Well bully for you. That doesn’t cut if for a lot of us. Jot down some of the things you like:
Time to take photos, fishing, cross country skiing, a long walk, mountain hikes, walking on the beach, ice cream, a nap, reading a fun book, go on write your own list – do it.
Now think of the projects, appointments, phone calls, and to-do’s you have. What if you look at what you do with a rest/reward incentive. When you have finished working on a big project for the day reward yourself. Give yourself that atta-boy. Maybe the best reward is to take a nap – do it. This is not necessarily a selfish activity when it helps to motivate you to focus and do your work well. Mix up the rest and reward so not all your rewards are food, or drinking with the girls after work, or shopping. Give yourself some healthy and worthwhile rewards for what you accomplish.
We can’t always look outside of ourselves for praise. We need to find ways to thank and encourage ourselves. One of my favorites is to put on some jazz, open up my bible, and have just some quiet time with God. It can reenergize me when the day is long or when the project is intense. It may be different for you but think about the rest/reward time in your day – I think you will get more out of it and have some fun too.
One other thought – while you think of encouraging yourself, share the idea with someone else or give them some words of encouragement. They might need it more than you do.

those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” Proverbs 11;25
