Spiritual Life Coaching – Pardon

Spiritual Life Coaching – Pardon

On September 8, 1974 President Gerald Ford gave a presidential pardon to Richard Nixon, who had just recently resigned office. Congress had accused Nixon of obstruction of justice during the investigation of the Watergate scandal, which began in 1972. Nixon chose to resign on August 8, 1974.

President Ford had no historical or legal precedents to guide him in the matter of Nixon’s pending indictment. I believe, for the sake of the country’s health and the nation to move on, Ford may have sacrificed his own political ambitions when he decided to give Nixon a full pardon for all offenses against the United States. Ford’s decision to pardon Nixon was condemned by many and is thought to have contributed to Ford’s failure to win the 1976 election.

Nixon responded to Ford’s pardon, communicating that he had gained a new perspective on the Watergate affair since his resignation. He admitted that he was “wrong in not acting more decisively and more forthrightly in dealing with Watergate. Nixon was completely absorbed by politics. Ford sacrificed personal political ambition for the country – two very different men. I believe, Ford is the greater man and we need more politicians like him.

“And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Mark 11:25

Pardon and forgiveness is not as much for the other as it is for you or for the greater good. Jesus lived this – taught this – and wanted the world to know this. Harboring unforgiveness just makes us weaker and bitter. So on this day of “The Pardon,” forgive – pardon – let go of any of the old grudges you still hold on to and…

Be Well…
