It’s hard to simplify in a complex world. I’d like to simplify more and will be thinking about it all week. I get the sense that most of us have a life that is too complicated – at least complicated with the wrong things. So today, I’d like you to think about and pray about two things:
First, let’s make a list of the five most important things in our life. What’s most important to us? What do we value most? What things do we most want to do in our life? It is possible that they may be different than what we are doing. (I’m not talking about people right now but that may come later.) Let’s start with these essentials, as we are trying to make room in our life we will have more time for these important things.
Second, let’s evaluate our commitments. We will look at everything we’ve got going on in our life. Everything, from work, to home, to civic involvement, to kids’ activities, to hobbies, to side businesses, to projects. Think about which of these really gives us value, which ones we love doing. Which of these are in line with the five most important things we’ve listed? Say yes to these things and no to almost everything else. Pick a day during the week and start “pink slipping” some of the activities. If we are not good for ourselves we won’t be good for anyone else. This is not a declaration of selfishness but self-care.
“But above all, my sisters and brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no…” James 5:12
