Is a true Christian a communal socialist who gives up claims to all possessions? Acts 2 points out: “44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” When people were battling extreme poverty and threatened by the governmental and religious bodies this may have been the best way to survive and thrive. Actually many church communities continue the tradition of taking care of the needs of people in their faith family.
Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent are political labels but Christian is the name under which followers of Jesus move forward. It is not a political movement as much as it is a movement of love and service. What are your possessions meant for? A comfortable retirement, leaving wealth to your children, the continuation of your business for the sake your employees, are all reasons to accumulate wealth but ultimately for the Christian it is intended to bless others. You are blessed to be a blessing.
Go be a success. Build wealth, create jobs, construct businesses, even business empires but do it for the right reason – so you will be a blessing for others. Jesus called his disciples from all walks of life – but he called them to NEW life. A “true” Christian is defined by one thing only – faith in Jesus who gives us faith. We no longer have to worry about some little slip up that sends us to the depths of despair and hell. We no longer need to say or do the right ritual to atone for our sin. We are his and nothing can change that. Rest easy and do good. We are free to love and live. Followers of Jesus don’t worry so much about whose a “true” Christian – they just want more people to know about Jesus and his love.
